Life around a babbling brook

The Babbling Brook

by Pamusart

I watch the babbling brook below
as peaceful blue-brown waters flow.
The mossy rocks add greenish hue,
but overall it still looks blue.
A dragonfly suns on a log.
He's almost snared by tongue of frog.
He flies away and just in time.
Into the sky, his wide wings climb.

Transparent wings reflect the light.
They must stay dry or lose their flight.
The frog has plenty other prey.
Mosquitoes enter their last day.
But dragonflies will eat far more
mosquitoes than the frog can store.
A noisy flock of honking geese
has caused all eyes to look through trees.

They're heading south to warmer climes.
They're well aware that now's the time.
But still, the sun is warm and bright
providing light that guides a kite.
A dragon tail climbs up the breeze.
The kids who fly it are at ease.
They stop to watch a honey bee,
that's not aware that they can see.

They watch it dodge the frog's long tongue,
and fly away to hives far-flung.
They'd better get away from here.
They drop the kite and run in fear.
The frog must flee before the crowd
of swarming bees becomes a cloud.
The babbling brook has lost its peace
as overhead the bees release.

They cannot swim or break the plane
of water where the frog had lain.
The kiters still attempt to flee,
but can't run faster than a bee.
Then something catches beady eyes,
and bees return to guard their hives.
They've caught the motion of a bear
pursuing honey combs so rare.

The bear's immune to their defense.
The hives are built atop a fence.
The bear will hibernate real soon.
It's now the early afternoon.
He leaves the queen alive, unhurt.
But, still the workers are alert.
This late but very warm fall day
has put its beauty on display.
