The Vice of Age

by tfawcus

The vice of age is counting back regrets
upon an abacus of might-have-beens,
with missing beads conveniently mislaid,
and finding that the past does not add up
to anything worthwhile, mere footprints left
in dust that’s blown away by wings of Death.
This epitaph is all that's left behind:
John Doe was born and died and here he lies
(with mention of the love that lay between).
Is that the sum? But is it not enough?
He came, and lived with love before he went.

There's not much Blank Verse on FanStory these days. Milton and Shakespeare favoured the form, which consists of unrhymed iambic pentameters that follow the natural rhythm of speech.
It's not unusual to find trochaic and pyrrhic substitutions, caesuras, enjambment and feminine endings scattered throughout for variation or to throw emphasis on significant words. Don't be alarmed if you find any of them in this.
