A poem

Tannenbaum

by royowen

So long before those German folk invented Christmas trees.
That market was once cornered by those Jews, promotion seized.
Now Martin Luther sorted out, he called it Tannenbaum.
But simply said, a Christmas tree, whose trunk was coloured brown.

They draped it with some coloured things, with baubles, stars and things.
These folk would dance around that tree, just like the highland fling.
Two thousand years before all this God spoke to Jeremiah.
Who was the prophet of that time, who spread God's Holy fire.

God said there seems to be a fuss, pray tell me prophet dear.
They decorate this tree with things to me it isn't clear.
It has no legs, it cannot walk, they treat it like a pet.
They nail it to the wall, so pleased, much pleasure do they get.

2,000 years they'll prize this thing, gaze here and they will see.
I'm just as puzzled then as now, they call it 'Christmas tree.'

Jeremiah 10:3-5
For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped with a chisel by the hands of a craftsman. 4They adorn it with silver and gold and fasten it with hammer and nails, so that it will not totter. 5Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no harm, and neither can they do any good.”…
