He did his best
Ole Blue

This is an adaptation of a poem I wrote and posted in January 2023 entitled "The Ballad of Ole Blue." I had to rewrite it for a contest I entered for a southwestern US magazine. The requirements were that it take place in the southwestern US and that it have some sort of paranormal or spiritual element to it. First prize would have been $2,000 if I remember correctly.
Unfortunately, they had to cancel the contest for lack of sufficient entries and refund my $25 entry fee.
I have since revised it again, especially the ending, to turn it into a children's picture book for ages 6-10. I have recently submitted it to a slew of indie publishers who accept unagented submissions in hopes that someone may think it would make a good children's book.
It amazes me, though, how so many publishers do NOT want rhyming books. They don't say why, but I think part of the reason is the difficulty in translating them into other languages. But they were always my favorites to read to my kids and grandkids. Think Dr. Seuss and Bill Peet.
So, we'll see if I get any nibbles on it. I think with the right artist, some great pictures could be made for this story.
