tspencer: Just my opinion, but getting a review that states that my story is to long is no value added. I've always believed that a story is as long as it needs to be to convey it's meaning: beginning, middle, and end. No writer should be afraid of writing a story that is long. As for an entry in a contest, yes i aggree that the writer should always be cognizant of the rules and word length. But, say the contest rules state a 7000 word limit, or there is no limit, there is nothing wrong with writing a story that is long as long as the word limit is adhered too. So, giving a bad review because the author wrote a story on the long side, but stayed within the rules, is bad form. That is not to say, that if the story could genuinely use a trimming down that as a reviewer that I or others shouldn't bring that to the author's attention. But to offer statements such as "this piece is far to long to read" without giving structural reasoning for being to long, does not offer the author any guidance on how to improve the story or their craft. I personally only review stories that I know I can read from beginning to end, and I usually read the story twice regardless of length. I only ask for that in kind. |

If you do write longer, as I frequently do, it's always good to acknowledge those folk who did just that and if they give you a decent review as well all the better. This is one of the reasons many people split their work up into instalments so as to ensure the readership and stand a better chance of constructive reviewing. Mind you, there's nothing quite so bad as reading a long piece, critiquing it, giving a constructive thought-out review and receive nothing back from the author, or a simple 'thanks'. I have often posted long stuff and it's hard to get reviews for it. What that means is many people are doing it primarily for the money. When Fanstory first started, I had a small group of readers that would read my stuff for free, believe it or not, because they liked the story, not just for the money. Not anymore. Sad. Okay, I'll shut up now. Good luck with your writing. I'll post some comments on "twins" separately. - | ||

tspencer: So, I'm back. I've been away for awhile now and have finally decided to come back here. While i was gone i worked on my book, which i brought to a finish last summer and put out the eBook version. it is called A Brief Moment In Time. it's a collection of short stories. I have to thank a lot of people from here, i don't know if they are still on this site, but i have to thank them because many of the stories in ABMIT were initially published here. I will be releasing the print version in about two weeks. will be posting more stories here soon for now, I'm here and ready to keep writing. T.W. Spencer |

tspencer: With regret I will no longer post my stories here. Over the last couple of years, though it has made me work diligently on my craft, I feel that I have gotten very little in return from this site and am left wondering why I should continue posting here. I am currently in the final process of publishing my first eBook, which will be available for Kindle and Nook, and I hope to start publishing a short story a month and my novel early next year. So my time is very limited; posting here would counterproductive. Really it was never a perfect fit. So farewell, and to those of you who took notice and gave of your time and effort with reviews, I am sincerely grateful for your input; it made me a better writer. T. W. Spencer |
