This poem is a most deserving winner of the blue ribbon I am happy to see it wearing. I so much enjoyed the sweet story it tells, and the musical lines and excellent rhymes used to tell it. I love the way you used the lines of stanza three in the final verse to bring the poem full circle and give it a neat closure. You are a masterful poet and this is a fine example of your skill. Congratulations on the First Place win.

Ciao mystery poet,

you now have 12 votes.

Sorry for your loss. Those very few friends I had, I lost track of them after my studies had ended. Sometimes, I do wonder what became of them.

After losing sight of each other, it's nice that you rekindled your friendship once both married and that you got together a few times before Lee passed away.

Cute photo.

Thanks, tempeste. Lee was one of the few childhood friends that I reconnected with.

Sorry , for the late reply

I didn't reconnect with any .. I was in boarding school from a very young age and during the holidays everyone went back to their hometowns.

Internet and mobiles were not around then.

I love the pic you provided .. is Lee wearing the read hoodie?

nicely done poem about life-long friendships. So very important to maintain and so hard to do. i have several life long friends - we get together weekly on zoom these days.

Thanks, Jake. I don't have any close friends left from childhood except for relatives.

Oh, my goodness! I had no idea that Lee died. I saw so many posts about him and figured he left FS.

What a sad turn of events! I should have looked into it deeper. So terrible and painful. He was a great writer. Best, JohnC

Thanks for the review, John. Sorry to mislead you. This is not the FS Lee.

This poem, Memories of Lee, presented with six ABCB-rhymed quatrains, recalls those halcyon years when adventure was just ahead and life was happy and eternal.

This is a touching tribute both to your lost friend and the magic of childhood friendships. It evoked many memories of my own. Sadly I've lost touch with all those early friends (too many moves from state to state) but I cherish the memories. Good luck in the contest!

Thanks, Ben. I never had a lot of really good friends, so each loss is a blow.

A charming, bittersweet poem - but very little of the 'bitter', so the more charming for that. I like the way that this poem has remained simple throughout - very much in keeping with the simple friendship of two little boys.

The central verse 'With mountain granite at our back/and sunlight on our face . .' is very fine as it is, but gains enormous significance when you modulate it at the end - then to refer to an idyllic reuniting after death. That is very moving, and very successful.
Probably a six, if not on Saturday!
Paul

Thanks, Paul. That line at the end really makes the poem.

This a sweet and lovely poem about the joy of friendship. I am so sorry for your loss. But I also think that your friend will always be with you in a special way. Good friendships never die.

I'm so sorry for your loss and I feel this is a lovely way to pay tribute to Lee. Your verse holds such delightful childhood memories and I particularly like your last 2 lines and the way they are a repetition from the third stanza. Seeing that picture of such young and lovely children seems to accentuate the sadness because, from the way you are both dressed, it doesn't seem to be that long ago.. Good luck in the contest! Debbie

Nice rhyming, rhythm, and imagery. Nice poem.
The second lines don't all have the same number of syllables, but that doesn't seem to affect the flow.
Good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Wayne. The poem is written in iambic heptameter. I did not like the long lines, so I carried the seven feet over two lines.
