Hi Janet,
This poem uses music as a metaphor for memories and reminds us how they can be happy or sad. But, we can always put a smile on and be thankful for something.
This also has a feeling of someone suffering from depression.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Good luck in the contest.
Congrats on being the recognized writer

Thank you Joan for you thoughtful and kind review. Just going through some "stuff" right now. My husband is going to have a valve replaced in his heart on May 3th, then he needs a knee replaced and some potential skin cancers removed. So not depressed, but definitely concerned. Thankfully we put our trust in our Savior and we will get through this. Thank you again for your kind words and congratulations.
    Blessings

    Hi Janet,
You're welcome. I will pray that everything will go well for your husband. I can empathize. My brother in law is going in for brain surgery on May 1st and then he also has to have his knees replaced.

Janet,

This poem of yours really resonated with me. ð??? For whatever reason, I feel like us 'writers'/'creatives' tend to struggle with insomnia more than others-- sometimes, I view being awake for these 'lonely hours' of the night as a gift, but sometimes I can't help but feel the loneliness seeping into my bones. It's a love-hate relationship that you described {b}perfectly{/b} in this poem.

As someone who struggles with severe depression, I know how it feels to spend the whole night crying-- silently begging God to give me some kind of sign that I still have a purpose. From your notes, and from your poem, I can tell that you have also spent a few nights doing the same thing. I know we don't know each other, but I just feel like I should tell you: I am SO GLAD that you exist! Just by reading this one poem, and the 'author's notes' you wrote at the bottom-- I can tell that you are the kind of person that brings light to other people's lives. YOU are someone who puts a smile on people's faces when they see you. YOU MATTER. ð?«? Never forget that, and never stop writing because you are spreading your light with your talent! ð???

Great work, and lovely rhyme scheme! Your last stanza, and the lyrics from the song you shared in your notes, have lifted my spirits and inspired me. I love the message at the end of your poem-- as long as we have breath in our lungs, and gratefulness in our hearts, we will live to smile again, on a brighter day.

Powerful. ð?¥¹

Janet, at first I didn't understand why you titled you poem "Smile". You obviously had lost someone in your life and if so I'm sorry for you did, then I see the Nat King Cole reference and it makes sense. "The mem'ry of a lullaby", not sure if you were the singer or receiver of that. The rhyming did not seem forced, the poem flowed well. At 73 I have experienced loss and grief and I can defiantly relate to the sorrow you write about. Good luck with the Rhyming poetry contest. Your poem was well written.

This is beautifully penned, Janet. Before reviewing I hopped on over to YouTube to marinate in the beautiful rendition of this song by the inimitable Nat King Cole.

Your rhymes are spot on, and your meter is even, without a stumble (as I read your words out loud!)---

in my younger days, I used to think this was an anthem about NOT allowing our emotions to show.

With age has come some perspective, I hope.

Of course, we all have sorrow...but as you've said perfectly in your poem's final stanza:

"Before the sun begins to rise
I'll dry my tears away.
And thank the one who gave me breath--
and smile another day."

How treasured are these smiles once we've wiped our tears away?

Karenina

The ability to smile and count yourself fortunate to have and enjoy the breath shows a maturity and an understanding of what is truly important in life. No matter how bitter the disappointment, the gift of life allows a swift turnaround lifting one high above the darkest of times and th deepest pit of grief and remorse.

Absolutely delightful poem inspired by a great singer. Full of melancholic lines but also hope for a better day tomorrow. The meter is spot on and your poem piqued my interest for more. Jacqueline

I agree that this post reflects a bittersweet consciousness that when your mind wanders or dreams, a myriad of memories and emotions escape their hidden places in one's brain. I read this several times and it made me realize a smile can change many things.

Great rhyming and so easy to read. Life brings us tears at times, but if we can learn to smile and trust the Lord, we can make it through. I thought of that scripture, "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."
