Kindergarten Break Time by samandlancelot True Story Contest contest entry |
When I attended kindergarten at a Catholic school, paid for by my bishop uncle, my favorite time of day was snack time. Every day I followed the other children to the front of the class to get my glass jar of milk. This went on for perhaps one month before a problem arose. A boy in my class had not gone up to get his milk before, because he hadn't wanted it, so there was always an extra left over for me. I didn't know parents had to pay for their children to have milk during break; I simply followed what everyone else did. But, this day the boy had wanted the milk his parents had paid for, and the teacher was short one bottle. Upon investigation, the boy revealed he had not wanted his milk before, but today he did. When the teacher checked her records, I was the only student whose parents hadn't paid for the milk. It wasn't free.
When I arrived home from school, I begged my mother for the money to bring to school so I could have my milk, like everyone else in the class. With nine children to support at the time, she simply didn't have it to give. I hated school. I hated break time, I hated being poor, and I hated my parents. I pouted and was miserable as I sat in my seat and watched every student in the class go up to the teacher and get their milk, except for me. After several torturous days, the little boy whose milk I had enjoyed before, walked over to me and gave me his milk. I was so happy. I looked at the teacher, and she said it was okay. That day I drank the best milk I ever drank in my life. The next day, I assumed I wouldn't get milk again. I watched as everyone else went to get their milk from the teacher. She told the boy to come get his milk, and then she told me to come get mine. Someone had donated the money to pay for my milk, and I could have it every day from then on. The giver was anonymous, and it was not my parents. Whoever it was, I never forgot their kindness for a poor little schoolgirl who liked her milk at break time. And I never forgot the kind and generous little boy.
