Silas beheld his daughter before him. Still and cold, her faint smile perceptible, just as he remembered. A favorite skirt, gray with rigid pleats, straight and precise, ended at the knees. Those motionless legs looked as though, at any minute, they would launch her into his arms. He set his chisel down.
