SIGH
If I weren't just a little kid
it wouldn't matter what I did.
A grown-up's what I'd like to be,
with no one else in charge of me.
I wouldn't have to share my toys
with any other girls and boys
or clean my room, I'd only play,
and never put my stuff away.
I'd dress myself from head to toes
then muss and scuff and tear my clothes,
bounce on the bed then slam the doors.
I'd pay someone to do my chores.
I'd be just like a mom or pop.
No one could ever tell me, "STOP!"
No one could say, "Do this!" "Do that!"
"Don't smash your toys!" "Don't chase the cat."
I'd tease my sister, brother too.
No one could tell me what to do,
no one, no matter what I did,
if I weren't just a little kid.

Writing Prompt |
Write a poem for a child. |
Author Notes
I think it is important to write pieces which can start a dialogue with children and let them know that you really do understand how they may feel because you remember what it was like to be a kid. Thanks to GoogleArt for use of the photo.
