in our country blood rushes through the rivers    come with me the night will follow   country men and women suffer  and their pain is mine   I don’t know them but they call my name from the trenches   they ask me come our battle is almost won   they’re the ones I love  who work in golden wheat fields and pick the ripe grapes from the vines   the fight will be hard but I will be by their side       Author Notes The Spanish Civil War was fought from 1936 to 1939 between the Republicans and the Nationalists. Republicans were left-leaning socialist, communist, anarchist, and republican parties, which opposed the government in the pre-war period. The opposing Nationalists were monarchists, conservatives, and traditionalists led by a fascist General Francisco Franco. The conservatives won and Franco was in power until he died in 1975.
