We watched as Jer and Tyler retreated into the woods. “That was quite something. His emotions must have been pretty strong in order to cause an earthquake like that. It makes me wonder what exactly happened during that fight.” I said, still worried about Jer. “I image so. He had the look of a man who touched death.” Demi replied. I looked at him in confusion. “I’ve seen it a lot, the change that happens in a person’s eyes when they come back from the brink of death. It only makes sense that coming within an inch of the afterlife would change a person.” “Maybe that’s why they were avoiding the topic when I asked.” “Probably, everyone deals with things differently. Some don’t want to talk about it, while others find comfort in sharing their story.” “And you? Have you also experienced that?” “Yes. But I was pretty young and assassination attempts were common place in my life. Since it was normal, I don’t think it impacted me the same way as someone who has led a relatively peaceful life. Anyway, no more distractions. It’s time for you to practice.” Demi smirked and I laughed. Yah, I should have expected that. I tried to focus on the feeling I experienced in my heart when my power unleashed. I really tried, but nothing was happening. “Is there anything that you find particularly moving? Anything that helps you express yourself or evokes emotion from you that isn’t solely negative?” Demi inquired. Come to think of it, there was something like that. Life has been so crazy, I forgot what I enjoyed before the mist was unleashed. “Music”, I answered. “I used to play the flute.” Demi looked genuinely surprised. “Really? I thought you too much of a tomboy for that. That makes things easier though. Imagine your power being the song of your flute. Just like music comes from deep inside, your power comes from the same place.” Well, that makes sense. I envisioned an imaginary flute, even lifting my fingers as if to play. Then, as if to mock my previous attempts, wind sprang forth from the tips of my fingers. It gently swirled around me like a comforting song. I closed my eyes, immersed in the experience. As my mind’s eye headed towards the crescendo, the light breeze picked up pace, lifting and twirling fallen leaves around me. When my imagined piece ended, the wind gently settled. I smiled. “Now, you know how to find it. It gets much easier from here. Instead of a peaceful song, imagine a fast, upbeat tempo. Imagine it as a war cry, with the music accompanying you in battle. I’ll be your opponent.” I nodded. I’ve never played music like that before, but if I imagine a tainted before me, it should be possible. I took my stance but instead of pulling out a sword, I visualized music bursting from my finger tips, attacking my enemy. I lunged forward, wind supporting my steps. I imagined a blade, and a symphony of music around me, rushing to the finish. A scythe of wind appeared in my hand. I imagined it flying towards my enemy. Visualization is a powerful thing. The wind blade carved a pathway in the ground beneath and tore towards Demi. Fortunately, Demi dodged. I landed beside him and both of us watched the wind tear through three consecutive trees. I turned pale. I could’ve killed my partner. While I was feeling guilty, Demi looked extremely pleased, almost proud. I heard applause coming from behind me and turned to see Jer clapping with an impressed face. “Wow, Taya, I wasn’t even gone that long and you’re out hear recking the forest.” Jeremy smiled, his eyes filled with laughter. I blushed in embarrassment. “Have you finished your conversation?” Demi asked. Tyler nodded his affirmation. “Good, now it’s your turn. Back to work.” Demi grinned.
