The Tarnished Locket by HarryT Flash Fiction contest entry |
![]() Sunlight barely penetrated the grimy attic window. The air in her grandparents' attic was stuffy, smelling of old things. Samantha was happy she was almost done cleaning.
Her last job was to put some of her grandmother’s old dresses in a trunk. Sam picked up a faded dress and shook it, dust danced into a beam of sunlight. Sam heard a click. She glanced down, near her foot on the floor, a tarnished locket and chain. An inscription said, "To my dearest, your secret lover.”
Was this her grandmother’s locket? Sam thought, bet it’s a gift from Grandpa.
“Time to go, dear,” her mother called. Sam dropped the locket into her pocket. Her grandmother hugged her and said, “Thanks for straightening up, dear.” Sam opened the locket at home. On one side was a picture of her grandmother when she was young, on the other side someone she didn’t recognize.
