Black Shape Confusion by Treischel
Sonnet Poetry Contest contest entry

What strange form, just above me, do I see?
A black perception test of Rorschach ilk?
Mayhaps, 'tis just a shadow in a tree,
or possibly a kite of lost black silk.

Yet, why shouldst I be troubled by such sight?
'Tis out of reach! Tantalus breach my thought!
'Though sudden motions didn't seem quite right,
there was no reason to become distraught.

Oh, now I see the wings within its form!
Am I a mole to miss this all along?
Hast come to life within its species norm,
and burst out with a lovely evening song.

Yae, now I know my anguish was absurd,
to be confounded by a little bird.

Author Notes
Tantalus - In Greek mythology, a son of Zeus who offended the gods at a banquet, stealing ambrosia, telling their secrets to humans, and feeding his dead son to them. He was punished in the underworld by food and drink being forever out of his reach. His name is the basis of the word -tantalize.

Rorschach Test - a test psychologists use consisting of inkblots to determine a patient's reactions to the image.

Moles are blind rodents that tunnel under the earth.
