When one does NOT understand the language.
Richard Tauber. Austrian Tenor by Eric Langford2
Poem of the Month contest entry

A prefered favorite of mine I know
the epitome of the light tenor voice,
but surely we need understand all the words
to derive the full pleasure of our musical choice.

Richard Tauber singing in his mother tongue
never devalues my whole emjoyment,
though I suss not a word or it's meaning perse
my delight never wains, I enjoy every moment.

As I hear it, the music is mine to interpret
the words though, a mystery for me to accept,
so, proceed I do as two concepts I marry
and tarry in musical bliss, though inept.

Should Richard sing The Rose of Tralee
then I'll be transported toaworld of joy,
for every word will be heartfelt and true
and I, seperated from the Hoi Palloi.

Am I a perfectionist of the musical kind
or, do my ears accept that whch they hear ?
Welcoming music as a heavenly choir
in perfection I hold it so dear.

Freed from the disenchantment of language
my enjoyment unadulterated and pure,
the joy I feel is simple elation
a joy from which I'll never detour......2pp
