Our friendship budded like a blossoming bloom
bringing bright colors, and a delightful perfume.
Yes, there were times when a frosty remark
caused, what seemed to be, irreparable harm,
only to have what we shared survive.
Ill winds blew time and again,
yet as one tree shelters the next in line,
our roots dug deeper and branches higher.
As these squalls passed by, skies cleared,
sun shined, and birds trilled away.
Then came a time in the days of our lives
when loneliness crept in to gain an edge.
Such experiences were inconvenient, but
as a warm knife passes through cold butter,
your smile cleared looming clouds,
for me as well as everyone else, providing
comfort, patience, and unconditional love.
What more can a person expect of a "friend?"
I should never have posed that question,
for unexpected consequences followed.
One day I asked for a hug; you gave a kiss instead.
Confused, what less could I do but return the favor?
That peck led to another, and the following morn
your fragrance hung upon my pillow;
yet as I turned, vacancy lay where you had been,
not only in my bed but in my soul as well.
I was concerned what we shared ended what we had.
because you left without saying goodbye?
Friendships get confusing once a line is crossed,
and I feared we allowed that line to be quartered.
Has our time passed? If so, I'll be upset,
for what's to be said when our paths cross?
How should we act? Do we need to repair,
what damage was caused last night?
Or am I placing the cart before the horse,
thinking the worst instead of the best?
The latter is my desire because, my life
is better with you than without you ... friend?
