The Winner by DeboraDyess
80 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

"Go be a winner," Abuela said as I left for school. "Winning is here." She tapped my chest. "It's a heart thing."

As my car rounded the corner, Abuela's mighty heart gave up this life, moving her on to the next.

My husband entered the room, interrupting that special memory. "Ready, Madam President?" He extended his arm.

"I'm not president, yet," I laughed.

"You will be after the swearing-in. Let's go make history. Your abuela would be so proud."

Author Notes
I said this to my granddaughter, Gabi this morning as she left for school. I did not die, though. *whew!* I'll be picking her up from her after-school club in an hour and find out how she was a winner today.
We never know what influence we have on those around us, be they family or strangers.
And I don't know if Gabi will ever even consider public office, much less running for POTUS (President of the United States). I hope not! That little girl is a smart, smart-mouthed, sassy, creative, fun kid. But she's got about as much organization in her as I do. If she does, y'all pray for the country extra hard! lol
