What actions of the sea can stir the soul
as much as watching waves approach in herds,
curl up, then smash upon a rocky shoal,
white spume soon geysering, surprising birds?
Bombastic as they thrash against sheer wall
and bawl through boulders' tapered passageway,
these breakers often scale great heights to fall,
then swoosh across the beach as froth and spray.
Whence comes that dominance with which they rise
like Caesar's legions marching into Rome
in ceaseless ranks, colossal in their size
until they've crashed, become soft bubbling foam?
Oh, watch them as they tower, tumble, race
with such stupendous power, grandeur, grace.
