On going to college I wasn’t too keen,
So I enlisted in the Army at seventeen,
Infantry training sure was swell,
Georgia in July is hot as Hell,
The Army took a gamble,
Sent me to Fort Campbell,
I must have been a fool,
Volunteered for Jump School,
Other training that was cool,
Went to Panama for Jungle School,
After a year I was Germany bound,
For two years I hung around,
Sent back to familiar ground,
Back at Campbell was great,
Re-enlisted for the fiftieth state,
Four years in Hawaii never surfed,
All I did was run and walk the turf,
Back to Germany just in time,
To see the wall crushed into lime,
I watched the Army transform,
As we had Desert Shield and Desert Storm,
Though it wasn’t planned,
Got my discharge in hand,
It dawned on me and I finally understood,
A college education started looking very good,
Of my time spent there’s no regrets.
Because now all my friends are vets.
