On the way home, Texas Rangers camp.
A chapter in the book Lawmen

Going home

by Charles D Ezell

My journey took me though Shelby County, an area known to cause trouble from racial motivated men who did their crimes at night. These were people who called themselves the Klan. These men seemed to thrive on mob rule and left their mark as the KKK.

I did not know Texas sent Rangers to investigate the Klan until I found their camp one evening. My Marshal badge got me an invite for a hot meal and coffee. The man in charge started our conversation with questions asking my business.

I could tell he was skeptical, but when I told him I was on my way home after trailing a suspected killer; his facial expressions changed to a smile prompting, "I suspect you were glad to have read that telegram?"

"Yes sir, I was, it being my first assignment. Now, I am on my home to be with my family. What brings the Texas Rangers way out here. Yaw, after someone?"

"Yes, a bunch of someone's."

I was glad he said what he did. Stories of mob hangings and other crimes since the war seemed to have been the actions committed in Shelby County or at least some people claimed.
I knew little about anything the rangers were there for and my plans were to continue homeward.

The weather was perfect for travel and if things went well, I would be home with my family within a day or so.

An investigation led to the Texas Rangers restoring order. Many of the mob executions committed throughout Texas in the time following the Civil War were racially motivated and often committed by members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), which formed in Shelby County, Texas.[11]
