Sonnet

That Year

by kiwisteveh

On January's snowy streets I found

this broken bird with eye as cold as ice.

Though friends all shook their heads and family frowned,

I took you in against all good advice

In love, or what seemed love, we found our joy

and shrugged off any thought of debt to pay

for careless passion treated as a toy;

the spring and summer fluttered fast away.

In grey October, as the cold winds blew

and autumn leaves turned streets to tattered gold

your thoughts grew distant, off in climes anew,

imprisoned in a cage that could not hold.

December came; your bars you smashed apart.

On freedom's wings you flew  -  and broke my heart.

I know you recognise that any decent reader will skim the extra syllable in 'family' to maintain the iambic meter...
