A Paradelle Poem

I'm Doing Well

by damommy

Now it’s getting dark
Now it’s getting dark
I must get up to lock the doors
I must get up to lock the doors
To lock the doors, I must get up
Now it’s getting dark

I haven’t read my new book yet
I haven’t read my new book yet
I curled up in comfy chair
I curled up in comfy chair
I haven’t curled up yet
in comfy chair my new book read

Did you just ask me how I’ve been?
Did you just ask me how I’ve been?
I’m doing well for one so old
I’m doing well for one so old
For one so old I’m doing well
How I’ve been did you just ask me

to lock the doors dark
now it’s getting for one so old
in my comfy chair
I haven’t curled up
Did you ask how my new book read
How I’ve been I’m doing well.

Paradelle writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
A Paradelle is a form of poetry members may not be familiar with. Paradelles are designed to be as repetitive as possible

American Poet Laureate Billy Collins created the form.

Rhyme Structure is optional

Meter is optional

The topic for the Paradelle is whatever the poet wishes to write about.

Paradelles contain simple rules:

Stanzas 1, 2, 3:

6 Lines each
Lines 1 and 2 must be the same
Lines 3 and 4 must be the same
Lines 5 and 6 must use all the words from Lines 1 and 3. No other words allowed

Stanza 4:

6 Lines
Must use all the words of Lines 5 and 6 of the first three stanzas. No other words allowed.

Because Paradelles contain specific requirements no deviations in formatting allowed.

In 1998, Billy Collins pulled off the greatest literary practical joke in the history of the English language: he invented the paradelle. For whatever reason, Collins decided to write an intentionally bad form poem. It was done as a joke, but his friend published in The American Scholars. In keeping with that is why my last stanza is silly.
