Mirror, Mirror, what do I see?

by Begin Again

“Psst! Jaq, look.”

“What is it, Gus? I’m busy eating my crackers and cheese.” Jaq nibbled a corner of the wheat thin.

“Jaq, do you see the fairy?

“If you mean that filthy bit of leaves on top of the mushroom,” Jaq sniffed, “I don’t just see it; the foul odor tells me something’s dead.”

“Shush! She’s asleep.”  Gus leaned closer to her, “ It’s a fairy. I know it.”

“Can’t tell a fairy from a musty lump of leaves?” Jaq shook his head, “Come and share my dinner, old friend.”

Gus scampered over to Jaq’s table. “Pleeaase, just look?”

“Look at what?” chirped the turtle doves.

“I want to see,” said Bunny.

The chipmunks chattered, “Me, too!”

Maid Marian and Robin Hood approached. Marian inquired, “What’s the fuss?”

Cinder awoke from her nap. She sat up, rubbing her tear-stained eyes.

“Ooooh! She’s crying.” The animals gathered closer. “Don’t cry. Can we help?”

Cinder frowned. “There’s a party at the castle, but I can’t go.”

“A party for everyone’s birthday,” Marian answered. “If it’s your birthday, you can go.”

“I’ve nothing to wear, and my clothes are soiled and torn.”

‘Wait,” said Mr. Hare. “We can gather flowers for her hair.”

“Yes, and I have rolls of ribbons,” Marion offered. “And a new dress.”

Later, they returned and offered their gifts. Robin brought a mirror. “See how beautiful you are.”

“Oh! You’re so kind.” She smiled, “I’d much rather celebrate with all of you!”

Happily, they sang, “Happy Birthday.”
