Chapter 10
My Green Lawn

By Jane Jane King

My now-so-green lawn
Brought to life by nitrogen
Brings to life my soul

Author Notes This winter, our lawn was dormant for much longer than normal. I have an unfortunate sense of permanence about everything, including lawns, so I was wringing my hands, grieving for greenery. We brought in a lawn specialist who tested the soil and then fertilized the lawn with nitrogen and oh happy day, it became green. I am now one happy woman with a happy green lawn!

Quality, my father used to say. You can always tell quality. I see it in his eyes.
Luminous eyes, with teasing hints of blue and green and brown, but no full disclosure. Little jewels, they are.
Eyes that possess innocence and such sweet sorrow.
Marveling eyes, mournful eyes, laughing eyes that find wonder in everything they see.
Eyes that crinkle with playful laughter, fill with angry tears, and repose oh-so-peacefully.
How can two small eyes barely six-weeks-old hold so much and feel so many things?
He once was in my dreams. And now he's in my arms.

Something I would never ever want to cease

I would so like to be
The breeze's dancing partner
A happy sight to see

So Mr. Summer breeze

Be my dancing partner
And make the wish come true

Chapter 54
Sprinkles Of Smiles

By Jane Jane King

Sprinkles of smiles
How they go 'round
Sometimes right within us
Sometimes can't be found

A farmer sees the soil
That he tilled with his hands
And the fruits of his labor
Spread out on the land

The farmer's wife rocks
Their teething babe on one knee
And gently cajoles him
Hididiledee

This baby-turned-man
In his navy-blue suit
Becomes an accountant
With a bonus to boot

The farmer's widow sees
In the accountant's earnest face
A trace of her strong farmer
With all his weary grace

The accountant-turned-dad
Rocks one twin on each knee
As he cranks out his numbers
Hidididiledee?

Nope Doesn't work
The piercing shrieks swell
Dad helplessly mutters
God damn to Hell

He grabs for the bottle
And numbs their sore gums
And his very sore nerves
With some strong shots of rum

The twins grab the bottle
It spills on his sums
Which then float away
With the flow of the rum

Into the world of babies
Flies his laughing dancing wife
She's passed the bar at last at last
Here's to the lawyer's life

They spread the word to Grandma
She comes over right away
To toast this happy moment
And the good times of today

Sprinkles of smiles are deceiving
They come at the oddest of times
'Midst teething rum fizzles raw grieving
And gone-awry nursery rhymes

The farmer plowed his fields
The accountant works his sums
The babies cut their teeth
And still the smiles come

What keeps these smiles coming
Through life's sometimes bumpy ride
Is the place from which they started
It's the heart that beats inside

Chapter 55
A Heavenly Dream

By Jane Jane King

Peacefully floating on white billowing clouds
I suddenly am swept inside the pearly gates of Paradise
Saint Peter the surprised gatekeeper now surprises me
With several boxes of my favorite chocolates.

Heaven-blessed by bursting hugs of bittersweet dark chocolates
Angel-kissed by delicate sprinkles of ambrosial almonds
These sumptuous, melt-in-your-mouth caramels and pralines
Are simply put a heavenly dream

Peacefully floating on my chocolaty heavenly dream-of-last-night
I suddenly am swept inside
The oyster-grey earthly early morning light
My dance-for-joy chocolates disappear out of sight

Suddenly swept back
To my flat chocolateless earthly-life truths
My billowing clouds my dance-for-joy chocolates my heavenly dreams
All go poof

Oh Saint Peter ardent keeper of heaven's gates and heavenly dreamers
Could you angel-express these chocolate pieces of Paradise
To this earthly heaven seeker
Along with angels' wings to raise me to the heavens where all the angels sing

Chapter 56
Rhymes and Jingles

By Jane Jane King

Floating Clouds

I wish I were a little cloud
Away above a sky so blue
I wish you were a little cloud
So I could float all day with you

The Sunflowers

The flowers are dancing
In the sun today
I wonder what makes
The flowers dance that way

The Snapdragon

The Snapdragon ate two bugs
And then he smiled at me
I hold I don't become
Good morsel number three

Talking Leaves

The leaves talk to me
Crunch crunch is what they say
Every now and then
When I come out to play

Turtle Tom

Turtle Tom crawled beneath a tree
I picked him up surprised as could be
Then I got a case of the blues
Turtle Tom watered my shoes

Little Dove

Oh Little one little one
Softly cooing dove
Baptized by holy waters
Flowing from above

Fly forth most gentle dove
On blessed wings so high
The winds of peace and love will guide you through the sky

Howls and Whispers

Summer breezes Winter winds
Howls and whispers everywhere
Echoing the same refrain
Somewhere there's a God out there

Chapter 57
A Softly Whispered Prayer

By Jane Jane King

The farmer's wife swings
Her little boy in the air
Hididdiley Dee
He laughs without care

Little boy becomes a man
Farmer goes to his rest
Sad young man pensively plans
How to feather the nest

This determined young man
In his navy-blue suit
Becomes an accountant
with a bonus to boot

He asks his mom to dinner
Don't worry I will pay
The waitress smiles to herself
As she goes on her way

'Neath brimming toasts to her corporate host
Mom whispers one lost prayer
Where oh where is that sweet little boy
She used to swing in the air?

Chapter 59
Inside The Old Farmhouse

By Jane Jane King

Inside the old farmhouse, 'round the old oak table
near the large bay window
not noticing the icicles against the windowpane
Tommy Jones eagerly gulps his steaming oatmeal sprinkled with brown sugar
laden with rich cream, thanks to Daisy the cow who grazes in the pasture just beyond
Tommy wants to ride Horace, his favorite horse
who's grazing with Daisy in the pasture just beyond

Inside the old farmhouse, 'round the old oak table, near the large bay window
unsettled by the icicles against the windowpane
Mamma Jones uneasily tries one bite of her steaming oatmeal
The waves of nausea set in
Her swollen body is laden with the unborn child within
who sometimes sleeps and sometimes bleeds.
The doctor says she must stay off her feet to stop the hemmoraging
But to pay the doctor she must help work the farm and milk Daisy the cow
who grazes in the pasture just beyond
Mama Jones prays that the unborn child inside who struggles to survive
will safely keep and soon become a lusty newborn kicking and alive
then sleep soundly within the comfort of her arms safe from harm.

Inside the old farmhouse, 'round the old oak table, near the large bay window
unfazed by the icicles against the windowpane
Farmer Jones steadfastly eats his steaming oatmeal.
Every bite is laden with hopes and dreams for his family
He gazes out the large bay window at Daisy the cow
who grazes in the pasture just beyond
He wills Daisy and her family to produce enough milk to keep the farm
and the barn and the farm animals in the barn well fed and safe from harm
to keep the old farmhouse and the Jones family safely inside the old farmhouse
eating their steaming oatmeal 'round the old oak table, near the large bay window
despite the icicles against the windowpane
to keep Tommy riding atop Horace, his favorite horse, every morning of his life
to keep Pete the farm worker working the farm so as to keep Mamma Jones off her feet
To keep paying the doctor to keep the unborn child inside alive and safe from harm
so that Momma Jones may soon hold a nestling newborn in her arms
A tough order to fill? Yes, it is true.
But fill it she will. Daisy, they're counting on you.

Outside the old farmhouse far beyond the old oak table and the large bay window
just beyond the pasture just beyond
within the deep bare branches of a tree
A Red Robin cheeps. The night owl sleeps
The morning sun seeps through melting the surrounding icicles
making the tree branches warm and dry
making the bay window sunny and bright.
A new day has begun Take heart everyone!

Chapter 60
Two Children From Saigon

By Jane Jane King

I romped upon JoJo, my water buffalo, playfully twirling my yo-yo
She giggled in the sun, enjoying the fun and a ripe yellow mango
We were after all just two children from Saigon
And so we laughed and played as though tomorrow would not come

She was untouched when we married two children from Saigon
Her now-so-shy glances were touching...The child's laughter was gone
She longingly said I'll never wish for the past...
And wistfully longed for so long

But then she stopped glancing shyly
And began to gaze with warm desire
The moon watched her sleep The sun smiled on her awakening charms
And I held the world in my arms

She mourned when I left her
I had to leave
She was too young to understand why
Every time I think of her I cry

Two children from Saigon with broken hearts that would not mend
Because I also loved a secret friend
But now I don't understand why
The mistake I made was big...So big I wish to die
